Mayor Ned Mannoun broke ground on Carnes Hill, signalling the start of construction of the new state-of-the-art sports facility, recreation park and library for the locals.

“The $30million project includes a skate park, picnic area, walking and cycling tracks and a community centre,” Mayor Mannoun said.

“Liverpool Council’s Carnes Hill project is a major investment and a major plank in Building Our New City beyond the city centre,” Mayor Mannoun said.

“Carnes Hill and surrounding suburbs will be home to 100,000 people in the near future, so this is a very important piece of infrastructure.

“The centre will reflect the needs of all the community with a playground and skate park for children and young adults, an indoor gym and outdoor sports courts. The library will hold a 20,000-strong collection, including books in our top four languages,” he added.

Work started on April 28 and the project is due to be completed by August 2016.

It will cater for the community including Carnes Hill, Hoxton Park, West Hoxton, Prestons, Middleton Grange, Edmondson Park and the broader Liverpool catchment.

• Indoor recreation centre (including gym)
• Library
• Public plaza – with a water feature and public art
• Skate park
• Children’s playground
