Nissen huts, boiled mutton, bottled milk and helping hands – are just a few of the memories of a time not so long ago in Fairfield’s history.

Fairfield City Museum and Gallery will host a new exhibition reflecting life in Fairfield throughout the World Wards and the positive and negative impacts on our community.

This travelling photographic exhibition from the National Archives of Australia details some of the many memories of post-war immigrants to Australia from the 1950s onwards.

At the end of World War II, the Australian Government believed the nation needed a larger population if it was to survive and grow.

As well as welcoming displaced persons, it launched a major campaing to entice other immigrants to Australia. It then faced the problem of housing them all.

Objects from the Museum’s Commonwealth Hostels of Australia collection will also feature in the exhibition.
